That sound you hear is the gleeful swoosh of backdoors everywhere flinging open to welcome rising temps. Say it with us: We survived the winter! To celebrate, we enlisted the help of Target Home Style Expert, Emily Henderson—this time to turn outdoor patios into inviting living rooms under the stars. Her formula is deceptively simple and affordable: textiles, lighting and plants.

Read on to hear from Emily herself about these easy tips!

Textiles:

Layered printed pillows in a decorated outdoor space

Layer textiles like new pillows and vintage throws to create a warm and inviting outdoor living room. Mix and match patterns in the same color palettes (I love these blues and whites!) in varying shapes and sizes for a look to create a unique patio look of your own.

Lighting:

String lighting hangs over a decorated outdoor space

Nothing creates ambience at night more than really pretty outdoor lighting – and a little bit can go a long way. Mix string lights and lanterns at varying heights for an eclectic party vibe (plus, string lights are versatile, inexpensive and are such a crowd pleaser!).

Plants:

Succulents are the perfect patio plant—they’re easy to find, and hard to kill. Plant them in small ceramics for effortlessly chic accents.

Potted plants

Make a lush and beautiful succulent garden by re-purposing an unexpected item—a hammered-silver decorative bowl. To get the look, begin with a small layer of gravel at the bottom of the bowl, followed by some potting soil. Then, artfully place different succulents in the bowl. After the arrangement is just right, fill in any holes with potting soil and cover empty spots with river rocks.
