The sun’ll come out tomorrow, but the sun will really shine on Nov. 16, when Target launches a limited-edition girl’s collection inspired by the upcoming “Annie” film. Set to hit theaters Dec. 19, Sony Pictures’ contemporized version of this family favorite features a star-studded cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz.
In celebration of the iconic story, Target partnered with the “Annie” costume designer, Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, on a 25-piece collection of girl’s apparel and accessories that captures the essence of the movie’s spirited characters.
Annie for Target by Renée Ehrlich Kalfus includes playful pieces with details like patching, embroidery, buttons and tulle, as well as a DIY kit that allows budding fashionistas to add even more color and personalization to their wardrobe. You’re never fully dressed without a smile, and with each item less than $30, you can bet your bottom dollar that this collection – including the iconic red dress and heart-shaped locket – will bring a smile to anyone’s face!
“Target is excited to bring guests a piece of the ‘Annie’ movie magic, just in time for the holiday season,” said Stacia Andersen, senior vice president, Apparel and Accessories, Target. “The collection’s mix-and-match theme inspires girls to express themselves by creating a look all their own, at prices moms and dads will appreciate.”
“We are thrilled to be part of Target’s first collaboration with a costume designer and their first holiday capsule collection for kids,” said George Leon, executive vice president and head of consumer marketing, Sony Pictures. “Just like our film, this collection was made with every girl in mind. Girls are going to fall in love with it.”

Tell us about your background as a costume designer.
I’ve been a Hollywood costume designer for more than 20 years, and have been fortunate to work on many well-known films such as “Baby Mama,” “Friends with Benefits” and “What Happens in Vegas.” I’m also proud of my work on period pieces like ”Cider House Rules” and “Chocolat,” for which I received a British Academy Award nomination in 2001.
What did you love most about working on the “Annie” movie?
“Annie” represents such a time-tested story – the idea that family is where you find it. There is such a wonderful challenge in taking an iconic story and making it contemporary. The mix of characters in the movie allowed me to think creatively about a wide range of costumes, and the great energy on set made it a joyful experience.
Can you talk about your experience creating the Annie for Target collection?
The ideas for the collection came right from the designs I created for the movie, like the jean jacket and red dress that Annie wears. From there, I worked hand-in-hand with the Target team to create a line that would bring those pieces to life and into the closets of girls everywhere.
What are the differences between designing costumes for movies versus working on a collection with Target?
For movies, each costume is designed with a character and story in mind. It’s like a puzzle. All of the costumes must fit together in terms of color, texture and context to help express what is happening in the story. When designing the collection for Target, I drew directly from my designs for the film to create clothes girls will want to wear over and over again.
Do you have a favorite moment from creating the collection?
It has to be Annie’s iconic red dress – designing a contemporary version of this fabulous party dress was a real highlight, and I’m thrilled I was able to recreate a nearly-identical version for Target. It’s a special piece I know young girls everywhere will love to wear during the holiday season and beyond.
Annie for Target by Renée Ehrlich Kalfus will be available in all U.S. Target stores and on Target.com beginning Nov. 16 – check back here later this fall for more information about the collection and Target’s partnership with Renée!

The screenplay is by Will Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna, based on the musical stage play “Annie,” book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and on “Little Orphan Annie,” © and ® Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.
