When we visited San Francisco-based artist Jeff Canham at The Woodshop, his studio in the Sunset District, we started to think his life might be too good to be true.

Jeff’s airy studio space is a 10-minute walk from the beach and when the waves are good, the avid surfer often picks up and spends the afternoon on his board. In a nutshell, we’re moving. Catch ya later!

Sand and surf aside, Jeff is a talented graphic designer and sign painter who honed his skills working as the art director at Surfer magazine and hand-painting signs. That, plus the fact that surf-inspired apparel is on everyone’s radar this summer, is exactly why Target partnered with him to create a limited-edition collection for Target’s Mossimo Supply Co.

Debuting May 11 in most Target stores and Target.com, Jeff designed surf-inspired graphics for everything from tees, tanks and towels to board shorts and beach bags for men and women — all of the essentials for your day at the beach!

After a studio tour and painting demonstration, we caught up with Jeff in his corner of The Woodshop to chat about his distinctive design process and his eternal love for surfing.
