We called on Liz Gumbinner—editor behind blogs such as Mom-101 and Cool Mom Tech—for her gadget guidance on what tech gifts to get this holiday season.
One of my favorite things to do at Cool Mom Tech is help readers with their gift-giving dilemmas. Below, I put together some ideas for the harder–to-shop-for family and friends on your own list. If all else fails, a Target GiftCard is a great idea (and they come in cute holiday designs!)
For the outdoor adventurer: The GoPro HERO3 Camcorder
Think video cameras are dead? Not a chance! This tough, sophisticated camcorder has completely revolutionized what it means to take video in a digital age. Strap it to bike handles, ski poles, a surfboard or a skateboarding helmet and you’ll be amazed at the immersive quality of the wide-angle film. It’s hard to bust, and water resistant down to 200 feet.
For the preschooler ready for a first tablet: The Nabi Jr
I’ve been a huge fan of Nabi tablets since they first launched, and now the Nabi Jr. is accessible to a younger child. What’s astounding is that for under $100 you get a fully functioning Android platform complete with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a webcam and a speedy processor all wrapped up in tough protective casing. Plus, the Nabi has all the safety features you’d hope for, so that your child isn’t cruising YouTube on their own.
For the college kid who’s earned a better pair of headphones: Beats Solo HD Headphones
There comes a point when you realize your child —or niece or nephew or grandkid—is stepping up to adult-quality tech gadgets but maybe can’t afford them on their own. In which case, the Beats Solo Headphones (in whatever color their heart desires!) make a thrilling gift. These must-have headphones feature the signature Beats Solo sound but in a smaller, sleeker package.
For the home entertainer: Sonos Play:1 Wireless Speaker
Remember the days when having a big audio set up meant drilling, wires and professional installation? No more. I am mad for the entire line of modular wireless speakers from Sonos, which are simple to set up and a fixture in my own home. The Play:1 is the newest entry—and the lightest and most affordable—which makes it great for smaller spaces or even for bringing outdoors when the weather’s nice again.
For the chic geek: Belkin Orla Kiely iPhone 5 Case
One of my favorite designers teamed up with one of the best tech case manufacturers to create a gorgeous line of iPhone 4 and 5 accessories conveniently available at Target! It’s got loads of fashion cred, and will protect phones from any slips or trips.
For the Monsters Inc. (or Incredibles or Pirates of the Caribbean) obsessed kid: Disney Infinity Starter Kit
Parents love Disney’s new interactive gaming platform that lets kids bring their favorite characters right into the screen. The games really get kids building and creating and thinking—and I especially appreciate that they’re happy to play with the figures even when the screen is off. (Psst… the brand new Frozen box set for Disney Infinity is just out too and will likely be a huge hit!)
For the girly girl: Hello Kitty 19” TV Monitor
Yes, it’s pretty much the cutest thing ever, right down to the pink and black remote control. I’ve talked to plenty of 20- and 30-something women dying for this, so don’t just think this is a teen gift. Let’s just say….”teen-at-heart.”
For absolutely anyone who has been very, very, very good this year:
The iPad Air Hard to believe but Apple has taken a near perfect product and made it even better. The lightweight size is wonderful for toting around, the new iOS7 works beautifully, and the retina display? Your pictures, movies and games have never looked better.Tip: If you’re getting an iPad with a cellular plan, activate it right in-store so your lucky recipient can simply open it and go. Trust me; this is one gift no one wants to wait to play with.
