team members networking at the Business for Social Responsibility Conference

harnessing the power of networks

In November, Target team members joined thought leaders and experts from around the world for some powerful conversation at the annual Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) Conference in San Francisco.

BSR represents one of the largest communities of corporate social responsibility leaders and thought leaders. The annual conference brings together more than 1,000 senior business executives, civil society representatives and industry experts from 45 countries to share strategies and insights on the future of sustainability.

As presenting sponsor of this year’s conference, Target helped facilitate meaningful dialogue around this year’s theme, “The Power of Networks.” The idea is that networks—from social media to business stakeholders—make change happen. So how can businesses harness the power of these networks to solve sustainability challenges?

During the conference, Kate Heiny, senior group manager, Sustainability, participated in a panel discussion, “Enabling Sustainable Lifestyles: The New Business Frontier,” alongside representatives from eBay, Futerra Sustainability Communications and BSR. The presentation focused on how businesses can enable global customers to live more sustainably.

“Target has a public commitment to empower guests and team members to live more sustainable lifestyles,” Kate said. “For example, we offer in-store recycling bins for plastic bags, small electronics, and bottles and cans. And we recently introduced the Target Sustainable Product Standard, developed in collaboration with stakeholders, to help us define for our guests what makes a product sustainable.”

Between presentations, attendees visited our branded Target Lounge, a reception area near the main ballroom, to relax, network, grab a snack or recharge their electronic devices. Our teams created the space using all reused and recycled materials—including wooden platform lounge seating with canvas cushions, lightbulb terrariums, and bioboard signs repurposed from past events—resulting in zero generated waste.
