Many guests know that Target collaborates with well-known fashion designers the likes of Phillip Lim and Jason Wu. But they might not know about our amazing in-house design talent. That’s why Target created an internal design competition for Product Design & Development (PD&D) team members. The result? The Mossimo Supply Co. Limited Edition Collection for men.
This is the first limited-edition collection designed exclusively by Target’s design team. Available now in 100 U.S. stores and at Target.com, the collection features men’s apparel and accessories that range from $19.99 to $59.99.
So, how did this collection come about? Earlier this year, PD&D team members were given the chance to create their own men’s collection for Mossimo Supply Co. There were not one, but two winners: Jon Weiland, designer, Softlines PD&D, for apparel, and Beth Gardner, senior designer, Softlines PD&D, for accessories.
“Target has some of the most creative designers in the industry working right here in Minnesota, and this competition gives us an opportunity to bring that talent to the forefront,” says Ethan McCusker, Target’s vice president of men’s apparel merchandising. “We’re keeping inspiration and design alive within our own team and bringing it directly to our guests, which is a huge part of what makes Target stand out.”
The Mossimo Supply Co. Limited Edition Collection is inspired by the woods and the great outdoors.
“I wanted to build a collection of authentic and functional sportswear pieces,” Jon says. “It feels very rugged Americana. You’ll find a lot of camouflage in the collection along with fall colors like mustard yellow and military green.”
Jon designed a puffer vest, canvas pant, henley hoodie and a cotton bomber jacket. And Beth designed a weekender bag, watch, camouflage media case, leather belt and an umbrella.
“I combined a camouflage influence with the gentlemen of the city,” Beth says. “My favorite piece is the heavy canvas weekender bag. It has a genuine leather handle and luggage tag, and there’s camo piping on the edge of the bag.”
The details are what make this collection stand out, says James Dion, buyer, Mens Basics. “Every piece in this collection has some surprising or wonderful detail. Whether it’s quality, color or finishing, every garment has its own special wink factor.”
Jon's and Beth's jobs, like many others at Target, offers the opportunity to use advanced technology on the job, grow within a talented team and make the shopping experience even better for guests. Want to learn more? Explore career opportunities at Target.
