Gregg Steinhafel takes the stage with Mayor Reed of Atlanta

On Sept. 24, Target team members and leaders joined more than 800 officers, business leaders and other community figures from across Atlanta  for the Atlanta Police Foundation's annual Crime is Toast public safety business breakfast.

As honorary chair of the event, Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and CEO of Target, opened the breakfast with a special message for the attendees.

“Like all the businesses represented here, Target knows strong, healthy and safe communities are critical to success,” he said. “Atlanta’s thriving institutions, including this [police] foundation and department, have created the conditions in which individuals, communities and businesses can flourish.”

During the traditional awards ceremony, brave men and women of the Atlanta Police Department were recognized with outstanding service awards, including Meritorious Service, Purple Heart and Officer of the Year. The event also featured the annual State of Public Safety address delivered by Mayor Kasim Reed and the State of the Force address from Police Chief George N. Turner, which outlined the successes of the city for the past year and plans for further improvement moving forward.

After the breakfast, several of the attendees made their way to nearby C.L. Gideons Elementary School for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony to open its fully renovated library and media center, made possible through a Target School Library Makeover. During an interview with CNN after the ceremony, Gregg shared his thoughts about Target's $1 billion commitment to education and more.

C.L. Gideons Elementary is one of 25 schools receiving a makeover from Target this year; we've renovated the libraries and other facilities at 175 schools in total across the U.S. since the program began in 2007.
