A Mind for Design: Target Heads to TED2013

The mind is a powerful thing—and must be flexed to keep growing and expanding. Each year, the world’s leading thinkers and influencers gather to do just that at the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, Calif.

Speakers explore a range of fascinating topics—this year’s TED2013 lineup includes SpaceX founder Elon Musk as well as U2’s Bono, an advocate for global poverty issues. The program also includes Ron Finley, a local food activist out of South Central Los Angeles, and architect Michael Green, who will speak on building sky scrapers out of wood. Oh, and virtual choir maestro Eric Whitacre will make an appearance with a surprise update to his 2011 “YouTube Choir” project.

To engage with the minds of TEDsters at TED2013, Target is hosting “A Mind for Design” themed social space and lounge area celebrating The Young, The Wise and The Undiscovered (this year’s theme). It features a reactive environment that changes color as guests engage in the space and brainwave-inspired seating. The space boasts a live Twitter feed that streams real-time tweets from TED attendees, so visitors won’t miss out on anything in between Talks.

The social space also includes EEG mind challenges and Brainscope scans that identify what type of mind “tribe” Tedsters belong to: explorer, foodie, techie, philanthropist or creative. Guests can flex their mind muscles with 3-D wooden brainteasers (trust us, they’re hard!) and enjoy healthy snacks while rehashing the last session’s Talks and making new connections.

And attendees will leave Long Beach with a bit of Target design too—this year’s TED Conference bag was created by industrial, textile and strategic designers from Target’s internal Product Design and Development team. The bag includes a detachable bottom that comes in five colors, denoting each “tribe.” The bag’s style is both elegant and durable, putting color blocking, mixed materials and removable pieces to use. If you couldn’t make it to the TED Conference this year, here’s another way to get your daily brain boost. Try out the brain food below (recipes courtesy of the Target Test Kitchen) and hit the couch with a few free TED Talks. Here are some of our favorite design Talks to get you started:  Thomas Heatherwick on building a Seed Cathedral, Chip Kidd on designing book covers and Shea Hembrey on becoming 100 artists.

Lentil Kielbasa Soup
Makes 6 to 8 servings

What You’ll Need:
1 tbsp. oil
1 large onion, chopped
5 carrots, thinly sliced
4 medium red potatoes, peeled, cubed
2 celery ribs, thinly sliced
1 can (14.5 oz.) Market Pantry Diced Tomatoes
1 cup Markey Pantry Lentils, rinsed and sorted
3 cans (14 oz.) Market Pantry Chicken Broth
3 cups water
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups diced, cooked smoked Market Pantry Turkey Sausage

What You’ll Do:
1.       Heat oil in large pot.  Add onion. Cook over medium-low heat about 15 minutes until onions are very tender and begin to turn golden brown, stirring occasionally.
2.       Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil; cover. Reduce heat; simmer about 30 minutes.
3.       Add sausage; simmer 10 minutes until vegetables are tender.

Quinoa with Black Beans and Corn
Makes 4 servings

What You’ll Need:
1 cup Archer Farms Quinoa
1 (15.5-oz.) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15.25-oz.) can sweet corn, drained
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
3 tbsp. lime juice
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 tsp. ground cumin
1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce; finely chopped; if desired

What You’ll Do:

1.   Cook quinoa according to package directions. Combine beans, corn, red bell pepper and cilantro in large bowl. Stir in cooked quinoa.
2.   Combine lime juice, oil and cumin in small bowl. Stir in chipotle pepper, if desired. Toss with quinoa mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or chilled.

Blueberry Applesauce
Makes 2 to 3 cups

What You’ll Need:
2 apples, peeled, cored and cut into bite-size pieces
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. cinnamon, if desired
1 pkg. (12 oz.) Market Pantry Frozen Blueberries

What You’ll Do:
1.      Combine all ingredients in large saucepan.  Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.  Reduce heat.
2.      Simmer uncovered about 5 minutes until apples are tender, stirring occasionally.  Serve warm or cool.
