Valentine’s Day is more than a “Hallmark holiday” or an excuse to get gussied up and eat chocolate (although we do love that part). With romantic roots tracing back to the third century A.D., the holiday is associated with the mysterious legend of St. Valentine.
According to ancient myth, Roman Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage in order to bulk up his army and prevent young soldiers from being distracted by love. But St. Valentine, a renegade and lover at heart, united couples despite the ban and performed marriages in secret.
Once Valentine’s actions were discovered, the evil emperor sentenced him to death. As a final farewell, a lovesick Valentine wrote a letter to an unknown lover signed, “From your Valentine”—a greeting many still use today.
