Bill Lieder at his ceremony to be promoted to rank of brigadier general.

When it comes to leading a team, Risk and Compliance Operations Manager Bill Lieder’s talent comes from experience in both work and service. As a 19-year team member, he’s managed multiple Target teams—from Assets Protection to Corporate Security—and throughout his 30-year career as a Minnesota National Guardsman, he’s held command positions both in the U.S. and overseas. Over the years, he’s become well-known as an ambassador and mentor, making connections between Target teams and many of our military partners and organizations.

At a ceremony on Jan. 4, 2013, family, friends and colleagues gathered in celebration to watch as Bill was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. It’s a rare honor; only six others at the general officer level currently live in Minnesota. During the ceremony, Minnesota Army National Guard Adjutant General Major General Rick Nash praised Bill’s leadership, peacemaking skills and passion for his soldiers and their families. He also recognized Target’s support for the Guard and deployed team members.

On his history of service in the Minnesota National Guard
“I was deployed twice: The first time, I was provost marshal of Stabilization Force 14, Task Force Eagle on a peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. The second time was between 2005 and 2007, as commander of the 1-216th Air Defense Battalion supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Today, I act as the Deputy Commanding General for the 34th Infantry Division—I am the primary advisor to the Division Commander for readiness and force structure issues."

On making connections between Target and military partners
“One of my favorite projects was helping Target become one of the first Beyond the Yellow Ribbon companies. It started when my colleagues and I returned from Iraq in 2007; we were so focused on getting home to our families that we didn’t realize how difficult it could be to get back into the workplace. So we partnered with Target to get involved in the initiative, which helps connect returning service members and their families with community support, training, services and resources."

On his proudest moment in service
“I’ll never forget my incredible battalion in Iraq. Our brigade was deployed for 22 months, the longest of any Brigade Combat Team serving at the time, to set the conditions for stability in Iraq. We provided convoy escort security for more than 29,000 trucks traveling through the area, covering more than 3 million miles. On return to the U.S., the team was recognized with the Meritorious Unit commendation. I am so proud of them.”

On developing his leadership style and skills
“The greatest thing I’ve learned when leading teams is the importance of collaboration. Leadership is not about ordering others around and being inflexible; you need to collaborate with your colleagues and get everyone’s input so you can make the best decision before moving forward, or you won’t be successful.”

On volunteerism and networking
“I’ve enjoyed being a part of Target’s Military Business Council—one of Target’s diversity and inclusion business councils, which help our headquarters team members make connections, celebrate unique backgrounds and perspectives, and support the community. I particularly liked connecting the Minnesota National Guard with Target to take part in a mentorship program at the local YMCA where we work with at-risk youth."

“I feel really lucky for the opportunities I’ve had to serve both my state and my country. I’m incredibly thankful for my family, friends and colleagues who helped and supported me along the way, and I’m proud to be a part of the Target team and everything we do to give back to the community.”
