students at Albert Will Angier Elementary are excited to see their new library and food pantry

Over Veterans Day weekend, team members and veteran volunteers from our partner organization, The Mission Continues came together for a day of service at two elementary schools that serve military families—Stevenson Elementary School in Mesa, Ariz., and Albert Will Angier Elementary in San Diego—as part of the Target School Library Makeover program.

Through the program, each school received 2,000 new books, furniture, carpet and shelves, and a complete technology upgrade, including new iPads. Each student also received seven new books to take home. Volunteers also set up a new Meals for Minds food pantry in each school, made possible by our partner, The Heart of America Foundation. In an effort to fight hunger and its impact on learning, the pantries will provide monthly distributions of fresh produce and staple foods to students and their families.

In 2012, the Target School Library Makeover program provided new libraries to 32 in-need elementary schools across the country and gave more than $12 million to support education. Through this and other programs, Target’s on track to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015, putting more kids on the path to graduation.

Since 2010, Target and The Mission Continues have participated in 42 schools projects in military communities, bringing more than 3,200 volunteers together. “Through these service projects, we challenge veterans to utilize their military skills and leadership at schools in their communities,” says Spencer Kympton, chief operating officer of The Mission Continues, “and we impart to the nation that they are local leaders and assets.”
