For most of us, the best part about shopping is picking up that must-have item off the shelf and throwing it in our cart. But for Target’s Product Design and Development (PD&D) team, the best part is every step that happens long before the product reaches the store.

Julie Guggemos, vice president of PD&D, oversees a team of more than 200 Target team members through the design process–from trend research and concept design to technical assessments and product testing. Below, she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her team in action and talks about what it takes to produce great design. Our favorite part? You get a sneak peek at Threshold, Target’s highly-anticipated home collection, out this fall.
