tips to find a good job

Avoid Post-Grad Puzzle with 6 Tips for a Successful Job Search

So, you graduated college with degree in hand, landed a few great internships along the way and made lifelong friends. Now what?

Whether you’re fresh out of school or a seasoned professional looking for a career change, there’s no doubt that finding a job — and the right one for you — can be a daunting endeavor. To help you land your dream job, we’ve rounded up six tips suited for any career path you choose.

Get Organized. First things first, compile a list of all the positions and places you would like to work. This will help you hone in on what you’re looking for, while steering clear of a job you don’t enjoy. Cast a wide net when looking for positions or potential career paths.

Stay Connected. Don’t underestimate the power of websites like LinkedIn, which help you keep in touch with peers, colleagues and acquaintances, while also finding and connecting with potential new employers. Sometimes who you know can make all the difference. Then you can shine with what you know.

Stand Out. For every one hundred resumes an employer gets, there’s one hundred more on their way. Be sure to personalize your resume and cover letter so that you stand out from the crowd. Whether it’s including a line about a unique interest or sending a handwritten thank you note after an interview, the extra time and effort will go a long way.

Prep for each interview. “Tell me about yourself.” While it sounds like an easy enough request, it’s a good idea to practice your 30-second elevator speech. Include where you’re going and how you plan to get there. (Sometimes standing in front of a mirror can help). And of course, study your resume

Do Your Research. Congratulations — you’ve landed the interview! But you’re not done yet. There’s nothing worse than coming to an interview unprepared. Make sure to research the company’s history and come up with at least five questions to ask to show that you’ve made an effort and are excited about the opportunity.

Be Yourself. Last, but definitely not least — remember to be true to yourself. While this can often be the hardest to overcome, it’s the most important. Take a deep breath, relax and showcase your personality.
