Target's Coronavirus Response

At Target, we play a critical role in providing our guests across the country with the products they need as they manage the continued impact of COVID-19. With health and safety as our top priority, we've taken a number of steps throughout the pandemic in support of our team and guests, including increased safety and disinfecting measures in our stores and distribution centers and enhanced pay and benefits.

We continue to believe that getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against the COVID-19 virus, and we’re supporting our communities by partnering with CVS locations within Target stores to offer vaccines to guests and team members.

We’ll continue to listen to the guidance of public health experts and evolve our COVID-19 response to help our team members and guests navigate these uncertain times.

Our guest experience

Does Target require guests to wear masks in stores?

The health and safety of our guests and team members have been Target’s top priorities throughout the pandemic. As COVID-19 cases have declined, Target will not require our U.S. team members or guests to wear masks, as local regulations allow. We’ll follow all state and local COVID-19 safety regulations and encourage our team members and guests to consult the latest public health guidance, get vaccinated and make decisions to keep themselves and their families safe.

Is Target offering a COVID-19 vaccine to guests?

Target is continuing to support its communities during the pandemic by partnering with CVS locations within Target stores to offer vaccines to guests. Through our longstanding partnership with CVS, more than 1,700 Target stores currently have a CVS pharmacy inside, and we’re offering vaccine appointments at nearly all these locations. Like many companies, we continue to work closely with our partners and listen to guidance from public health experts as we support vaccine distribution efforts.

Will Target have the items I need?

As we have throughout the pandemic, Target is focused on getting our guests the essentials they need at an everyday low price. Our teams will remain flexible to changing consumer behavior and ensure Target remains an easy and safe place for guests to shop.

To ensure as many guests as possible can find the items they need, we’ve taken measures such as:

  • Coordinating stores, distribution centers and suppliers so that the things our guests need most — such as cleaning supplies, food, and over-the-counter medical and baby products — are fast-tracked through the supply chain and prioritized for re-stocking.

  • Adjusting limits as needed, and respectfully asking all guests to consider their immediate needs and purchase accordingly, so more families can find the products they need.

  • Working hard to complete online orders. But due to increased demand, they might be delayed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

What’s Target doing to keep guests and team members safe in stores?

Throughout the pandemic, we have invested in expanded safety, social distancing and rigorous cleaning routines, including:

  • Disinfecting and cleaning our stores, focusing on high touch areas like checklanes, and providing hand sanitizer for our guests.

  • Using Plexiglass partitions throughout our stores, including at checklanes, Starbucks, cafes, guest services and more.

  • Providing team members with face masks and COVID-19 tests.

  • Reminding guests about social distancing by using signs, floor stickers and audio messages in our stores.

We also have measures in place aimed at providing guests with an easy and safe shopping experience. We’ve consistently increased ways guests can check out quickly to avoid waiting in line during busy times, like adding more MyCheckout devices at stores across the country. Guests can also use Wallet, the mobile payment option in the Target app, for a contactless self-checkout experience regardless of where they choose to checkout in stores.

What fulfillment options are available at Target?

Target offers a variety of fulfilment options, and a number of updates are helping us accommodate increased demand, while keeping the safety of our guests and team members in mind.

  • We’ve staffed up in-demand, same-day services like Drive Up and Order Pickup and made the confirmation process contactless by eliminating guest signatures on our handheld devices. Team members place Drive Up orders in trunks or back seats of cars whenever possible.
  • We’ve dedicated more spaces in our parking lots for Drive Up to serve more guests and doubled the number of Drive Up spots by adding nearly 8,000 more, making it easier for guests to access this popular service.
  • We update Target.com regularly with estimated fulfillment and shipping times, as well as Shipt delivery windows, so guests can plan accordingly.
  • Shipt shoppers complete deliveries by leaving items at guests’ doors.
  • We’ve expanded the items available through same-day fulfillment options, offering fresh and frozen groceries through Order Pickup and Drive Up and kids’ and adult apparel through same-day delivery with Shipt.

Is Target continuing to sell face masks and personal protective equipment in stores?

In addition to providing all team members with face masks and donating KN95 respirator masks to first responders and healthcare professionals, we sell N95 respirator masks, non-medical fabric and disposable face masks on Target.com and in Target stores.

We have an assortment of owned brand face masks for the whole family from Universal Thread, Cat & Jack and Goodfellow & Co available on Target.com and in Target stores. Our internal design team developed these masks, which adhere to CDC guidelines. Guests can purchase these stylish but affordable fabric face masks for $2 for a single-pack or $4 for a two-pack.

What is Target doing to help team members get a COVID-19 vaccine?

What’s Target doing to ensure a safe environment in its supply chain facilities?

The safety of our team is our top priority, and we've implemented many measures to ensure a clean and safe working environment, including:

  • Asking team members to do a full health screening before coming to work each day.

  • Providing team members with reusable and disposable face masks and COVID-19 tests and encouraging healthy hygiene habits.

  • Enhancing our building cleaning and disinfecting processes, including increasing the frequency, focusing on high-touch areas like entryways, tools and stations, and providing more sanitation stations throughout our supply chain facilities.

  • Reconfiguring facilities for social distancing, including adjusting workstations to accommodate social distancing, staggering breaks and placing signs and floor decals throughout the building.

  • Temporarily pausing all large group gatherings in person, such as team and department meetings, and holding meetings virtually.

Are you hiring new team members to support increased demands?

We start by offering additional hours to existing team members who have interest and availability, then maintain our current approach to hiring and filling jobs across the network as needed.

Jobseekers can visit Target.com/Careers to learn more about open roles available in their area. Shipt is also adding shoppers in many areas of the country — visit Shipt.com for more information and to apply.

What is Target’s remote work guidance for headquarters team members?

We’ve designed the future of HQ work at Target to be hybrid — blending onsite and virtual work to give our team flexibility in how they collaborate and do their best work. While we won’t ask team members to be in the office with a set schedule or percentage of time, we know our physical offices will play an important role in how we work moving forward. Throughout the spring, our teams will continue testing new ways of working and will start to develop more regular hybrid work routines. Read more about the details of our hybrid work approach here

What is Target doing to keep team members safe in headquarters buildings?

As we are now welcoming team members back to headquarters, specifically at our U.S. HQ offices, the safety and well-being of the team is our top priority. We’ve developed our plans in close partnership with a broad network of medical experts, industry peers and authorities in the U.S., India and other global locations in ways that are right for each of our headquarters' offices. Safety measures include:

  • Encouraging team members to do a health screening check before coming to work each day.
  • Expanding rigorous cleaning routines of all high-touch points, sanitized by professional cleaning providers using EPA approved and CDC-recommended disinfectant products.
  • Providing team members with hand sanitizer and face masks to wear at work and encouraging healthy hygiene habits.
  • Encouraging team members to observe social distancing, limiting the number of people in elevators, and remaining six feet apart while entering and working in our offices.

What does Target do about cases of the COVID-19 among its team?

We treat every positive case of COVID-19 with care and work hard to maintain a variety of cleaning, social distancing and safety measures to protect our team and guests. We follow guidance from public health experts, and we are transparent with our team and share the steps we take after learning about a positive case.

  • We communicate with team members who have a positive or presumptive positive case of COVID-19 and share information about our COVID-19 benefits and health department guidelines.
  • We swiftly inform team members who work at a location where a case of COVID-19 is confirmed.
  • We work quickly to deep clean and disinfect the store or facility, which is the recommendation of public health experts, and provide information that any health department requests of us.

We encourage our team to come to us with any questions or concerns, so that we can quickly support and address them.

How are you compensating your frontline team members during this time?

Our ability to meet guests’ needs during this unprecedented time would not be possible without our frontline team members.

We continue to support our team through investments, including introducing an increased starting wage range of $15-24 an hour in 2022. We’ve also provided the following bonus payouts during the pandemic:

2021

  • In October, we announced that we are rewarding hourly team members in store, supply chain and service center positions, as well as select headquarters positions and seasonal team members, with an additional $2 per hour for all hours worked during peak moments through the holiday season.
  • Target awarded all frontline hourly full-time and part-time team members in stores, distribution centers and contact centers a $200 recognition bonus in July 2021.
  • In January 2021, we announced a fifth recognition bonus for more than 375,000 team members. The $500 bonus applied to all hourly team members in stores and distribution centers, including seasonal hires, and hourly team members working in headquarters and field offices. We also provided bonuses ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 to all 12,000 Store Directors, Executive Team Leaders and salaried Distribution Center leaders.

2020

  • From March 20 to July 4, all store and distribution center hourly full-time and part-time team members received a $2 temporary wage increase. As of July 5, Target permanently raised its starting minimum wage for U.S. team members to $15 per hour.
  • A $200 bonus to more than 350,000 frontline team members was distributed in early November, which was the fourth time Target has provided recognition bonuses to its frontline team members or leaders in stores and distribution centers. Target paid out bonuses ranging between $250 to $1,500 to store team leads who oversee individual departments in stores in April. All Store Directors, Executive Team Leaders and salaried Distribution Center leaders received a performance bonus, paid out in July. In addition to accelerating starting pay to $15, Target provided $200 bonuses to all hourly full-time and part-time frontline team members in stores and distribution centers in July.
  • We also launched DailyPay, a new offering to support team members' financial well-being by offering access to earned pay earlier.

Additional questions

Who is leading Target’s response to COVID-19?

Target’s Coronavirus Task Force, made up of members of our Leadership Team and additional leaders, is guiding our company’s planning, preparedness and response actions. They’re taking guidance from public health experts and government officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State and the World Health Organization, and also have a variety of medical experts providing direct counsel and advice.

What is Target doing to give back to communities that are impacted by COVID-19?

Early in 2020, Target committed $10 million to expand relief and assistance to team members and organizations helping respond to COVID-19. The $10 million donation supported four areas: team members, local communities, national organizations and global response organizations. This donation supported:

  • Team Members: $1 million was donated to the Target Team Member Giving Fund to help with the impact of this crisis on team members.

  • Local Communities: $5 million was donated to local and state community foundations supporting organizations addressing the greatest needs in their area, such as helping vulnerable and underrepresented populations. Recipients included partners coast to coast, including the Seattle Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund, which supports local organizations deploying emergency resources like financial support and childcare; the Greater New Orleans Foundation Disaster Response and Restoration Fund and its network of community organizations taking care of the elderly and the homeless, and many more.

  • National Organizations: $3 million was donated to support national partners assisting with response and recovery for affected communities. Recipients included the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, which supports nonprofits working directly with the most vulnerable populations in order to help build response capabilities; and Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization with a network of more than 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries.

  • Global Response: $1 million was donated to support organizations that are helping provide critical medical equipment and supplies to regions around the world. Recipients included Project ECHO, an organization bringing tele-medicine capabilities to remote locations and vulnerable populations in India and throughout the world; and UNICEF, which is delivering life-saving health supplies, building water and hygiene facilities, and keeping kids connected to education while working to stop the spread of COVID-19. Target also supported the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund in support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Target also invested $5 million to help underserved communities, at home and across the globe, have access to a COVID-19 vaccine and to support vaccine education efforts. These donations included:

  • $1 million to local and national nonprofits in the U.S. offering access to free and discounted rides to vaccination appointments through Lyft’s Universal Vaccine Access campaign, which is mobilizing a coalition of partners to provide underserved communities access to rides to and from vaccination sites.

  • $2.5 million to local community organizations across the country to better support vaccination efforts directly in the neighborhoods they serve, including the Minnesota Council on Foundations to coordinate philanthropic support with the Minnesota Department of Health’s vaccine equity effort to reach communities of color, people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations in our hometown of Minneapolis. It also includes supporting Latinos Progresando in Chicago to increase vaccinations in the Latino community.

  • $1 million toward the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative’s effort to educate the public and build confidence around the vaccines, particularly within communities of color hit particularly hard by the pandemic.

  • $500,000 to support UNICEF USA’s global work alongside the World Health Organization and partners to ensure fair, equitable access to vaccines, including countries with limited vaccine access.

To support the communities where our team members in India live and work, we donated $500,000 to UNICEF. The funds will help increase access to life-saving oxygen treatments in hospitals across the country and bring faster, more accurate testing resources to the hardest-hit communities. We’re also donating to local nonprofits providing additional aid throughout the country.

In the U.S., on top of previous donations of anti-viral and N95 respirator masks to first responders and healthcare professionals at more than 50 organizations across the country, Target donated an additional 2 million KN95 respirator masks to the medical community.

Can guests help Target give back?

When Target Circle members shop, they earn votes to help direct Target’s giving to nonprofits across the country. Our guests directed additional Target Circle giving to the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund in support of the World Health Organization and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy — in addition to local community organizations. How are you preparing for the spread of new variants of COVID-19?

As we have throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor and use the advice of public health experts to adjust and react as appropriate to the spread of COVID-19, including new variants that arise.
